The North East of England has been a focus of pilgrimage since at least the fifth century. In their time, the monastic communities of Cuthbert, Aidan, Bede and other Christian pioneers of North East England drew people from across Europe for spiritual nurture, learning, recording and creativity.
Today, we are fortunate in having several retreat centres which are set in lovely environments and reflect the spiritual heritage of this region. And you don’t need to be a churchgoer or follow a faith to enjoy a stay in a retreat, whether for a day or a week or longer.
