Overview

Interesting both architecturally and historically. Dating from Norman times, used for some time by Robert the Bruce as a stronghold to attack the Castle, it was the place where by Edward 1st received homage from the pretenders to the Scottish throne. The huge churchyard, still in use, is reputed to hold the remains of St Ceolwulf who was King of Northumbria about the time of St Cuthbert. It also has the grave of Corporal Laidlaw, the ‘Piper of Loos’, whose famous story dates from the First World War. The building fell into disrepair through parts of the 16th century, but was extensively restored in Victorian times and has been lovingly maintained since.
