Overview

The first of the Wearmouth-Jarrow monasteries built by St Benedict Biscop in 674AD and the home of the Venerable Bede, also associated with other North East saints, Hild, Ceolfrith, Benedict Biscop, Wilfrid, Eosterwine, Hwaetbert.

Many early stone artefacts, including Benedict Biscop's abbot throne and original porch and west wall visible. Open to the public most days with Bede's Bakehouse restaurant and gift shop.
