The site has interesting monastic ruins which are a mixture from the Saxon and Norman periods. The church chancel was originally a separate chapel dated at AD681 and is built with Roman stones. It contains the oldest Saxon stained glass found to date.

Other features include St. Bede's chair, a stone Saxon aumbrey and a dedication stone dated at AD685. Also of interest are the three more recent wooden sculptures by local artist Fenwick Lawson. They are :- The Risen Ascending Christ, St. Bede and St. Michael and the Devil. A Saxon stone cross which is called the "Jarrow Cross" was unearthed during Victorian restorations at the church and is now displayed in a glass case inside the church north aisle.
