This Catholic Cathedral was built in the early nineteenth century from the halfpenny subscriptions of the poorest people of Tyneside. It was designed by A W N Pugin, the designer of the Palace of Westminster, in the mediaeval style made popular by him in the Victorian Neo-Gothic Revival.

It has recently been refurbished, to include a new tiled floor, some modern stained-glass windows, and, through the generosity of a benefactor, a brand new pipe organ (completed in February 2013), one of the finest instruments in the country. In the grounds of the Cathedral is the Cardinal Hume Memorial Garden, opened by H.M. The Queen in 2000, to commemorate the life and work of one of Tyneside’s greatest sons, Basil Hume, Archbishop of Westminster. The Cathedral precinct, including its Cloister Cafe and Bookshop, is an oasis of peace in the busy city of Newcastle.

One of the finest works of Victorian architect AWN Pugin (designer of the Houses of Parliament) with impressive tile-work and stained glass windows, including the new Tyneside industrial Heritage window. Cardinal Hume Memorial Garden in its grounds.
