St John's is one of the oldest churches in the city. It is open daily and welcomes visitors from all over the world.

The first church was built on this site in c.1130. The only distinctive feature of this original Norman church remaining today is one rounded window arch, which can be seen in the chancel. The tower was added in c.1270, and then the nave was enlarged with the addition of the north aisle in c.1350. Further building work in about 1450 resulted in the church as we have it now.

St John's remains a vibrant worshipping community to this day, with daily Eucharist and a strong choral tradition maintained by its excellent choir. Lunchtime concerts and recitals add to the cultural repertoire, and the church is set in a pleasant attractive churchyard - one of the few green spaces in the city centre - which is enjoyed by the local community and visitors to the city alike.
