High House Chapel (Grade II listed) is the oldest purpose built Methodist Chapel in continuous use since it was built in 1760. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, visited every time he made pastoral visits to his Dales Circuit (13 times).

In 1804 a minister’s house was attached to the chapel. It is now The Weardale Museum housing a large collection of Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist memorabilia with displays telling the amazing story of John Wesley, the early evangelists and the huge number of ordinary lead-miners who flocked to "be saved". Methodism had an enormous impact on the Church we know today and their story of ordinary folk in simple buildings is an important part in our Christian Heritage. Learn also about; the church organ which came from the Victoria Hall, Sunderland as the result of a terrible accident involving nearly 200 children; and the early Methodist Subscription Library of 1788. Suggest a linking itinerary or trail through the North Pennines with Newbiggin Chapel in Teesdale, Westgate Primitive Methodist Chapel (which is owned by the Historic Churches Trust) and possibly Keenly Chapel near Allendale in Northumberland.
